With the emergence of a new countercultural led by millennials, ‘zines have once again found popularity, taking advantage of the Internet to spread information even further than before through digital means. (do-it-yourself) attitude that flourished within the subculture, reflecting a more informal and individualistic approach to the dissemination of information and ideas without the rigid formalities of mainstream literature. Arguably the most famous is the ‘zine - popularized in the punk/anarchist subculture of the 1980’s and 90’s, ‘zines were the antithesis of mainstream magazines, journals, and periodicals. Alternative forms of information dissemination have always been a crucial part of many radical forms of activism and organization. Theo’s I-am-a-scientist profile can be found on. Thus, the pupils asked us a lot of personal questions, along with science questions. The objectives of this programme is not only to engage pupils in science, but also to break the public stereotype of scientists. Theo Laftsogrou, who completed his PhD studies in 2017, took part in “ I’m a Scientist – Get me out of here“. On 4 November 2019, Lars Jeuken will give a public seminar to Pendle Café Scientifique in Barnoldswick on “‘bio-electricity’, how bacteria are electrically wired in nature and how/if these functions can be exploited in the generation of electricity from fuels or ‘solar fuels’ from sunlight”. Jonathan and Lars gave a short talk on antibiotic resistant infections, how they come about, the difficulties of diagnosing infections and how rapid diagnostics might help to reduce prescriptions. On Tuesday, 21 November 2017, Lars Jeuken and Dr Jonathan Sandoe spoke at a well-attended discussion on antimicrobial resistance at the Cafe Everythinque Leeds, Chapel Allerton (). After a 20 minutes presentation and a beer break, a lively discussion took place on how biotechnology could contribute to converting solar eneryg into fuel production. On 27 July 2016, we joined SciBar Nottingham for a great event. After editing these presentations will soon be provided on the TEDx sites. On the 28 October 2014, we joined the TEDx University of Leeds in their themed evening ‘Superior Science’. For more than 5 years, we have taken part in the Discovery Zone where we do experiments to understand how enzymes work and find out why we are able to understand how enzymes work. The Discovery Zone is one of the highlights of the Leeds Festival of Science programme at Leeds for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils. If you are interested, please contact us. Depending on the project and the work that needs doing, it might be possible to do some of the experimental work yourself. Work experience students will work alongside one of our PhD students.
